As far back as I can remember I can still hear my mother saying in a very heavy Italian accent “Only use the best quality ingredients when cooking.” She insisted that we shop at the butcher. My Mom would rather pay a few extra dollars and have a better cut of meat. You know what they say, “Mom is always right, again!”
Have you looked at our girls lately, they are so developed, they look like women at an early age. It made me want to do research and raised the question, what are we really feeding our children?
Since milk is an important staple in our home, mostly for cereal (Apple Jacks, my favorite). I decided to do research on Milk. What I uncovered about Cow’s Milk, scared me. Cow’s milk is pushed as a health food, but the reality is quite contrary. Did you know that for the last 30 years American cows have been injected with synthetic hormones? Our children need to be protected.
Here are a few facts about recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH). It is a synthetic hormone injected into cows to produce more milk. According to Wikipedia, the United States is the only developed country in the world that allows cows to be injected with artificial hormones. Canada and other countries in Europe have banned all dairy products from the USA because of these synthetic hormones.
These hormones are injected into the cows in order to produce more milk, in turn increases infection in the udders, creating more pus that ends up in the milk. This is the reason some brands of lower quality milk have a shorter expiration date. To overcome the infections, cows are injected with antibiotics. This may explain why so many people no longer derive benefits from antibiotics when they are sick.
A byproduct from the cows injected with rBGH and rBST hormones is known as IGF-1. It is an insulin-like hormone which cows are releasing through the milk. There is evidence it contributes to the rise in breast, prostate and colon cancer and accelerates the growth of these cancers.
It gets even worse.
This byproduct (IGF1 hormone) increases tumor growth and aggressiveness of tumors, according to Ethical Investing.com. It can also increase the progression of childhood leukemia, to the point where chemotherapy is ineffective. Pasteurization does not destroy the IGF1 hormone; it only increases its aggressiveness. It has been linked to increase in the number of multiple human births in the United States too. In 1997 the rate was 1.89 percent; in 2002 it jumped to 3.10 percent and has been increasing about 2% each year.
The FDA has been dragging their feet on this issue of labeling milk hormone free for 30 years. Rest assured, on September 29, 2010 labeling of milk from cows not treated with rBST became legal in all 50 states thanks to the State of Ohio, which would not back down. Thanks Ohio! So, when you are purchasing milk for your family, what should you look for? Look for the “organic” label on the bottle/carton.
