Rediscover the Cheesesteak: A Philadelphia Classic That Delivers

Whether you’re visiting Philly for the first time or falling in love with your hometown all over again, there’s one sandwich you simply must try: the cheesesteak.

Beloved by locals and visitors alike, the Philadelphia cheesesteak is more than a sandwich—it’s a symbol of the city’s history, flavor, and heart. With the nation preparing to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, there’s no better time to explore the foods that shaped this iconic American city.

So why is the cheesesteak so special? The magic lies in its simplicity: chopped or sliced beef, melted cheese, sweet sautéed onions, and a soft Italian hoagie roll. Born in the Italian Market in 1933 thanks to Pat Olivieri—the original “King of Steaks”—the cheesesteak has been satisfying cravings and sparking debates about “who does it best” for nearly a century.

As a native Philadelphian and professional chef, I’ve spent years tasting, teaching, and touring—and I’m happy to share a few of my personal favorites with you.

Chef Jacquie’s Top 3 Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia

1. Angelo’s Pizzeria – South Philly

If you’re a fan of freshly baked bread, Angelo’s Pizzeria is the gold standard. Their cheesesteaks are made with melted Cooper Sharp cheese nestled into warm, crackly, seeded rolls that they bake in-house. It’s a must-try—just remember to bring cash, and be prepared to wait in line. The pizza may have made them famous, but it’s the cheesesteaks that quietly steal the show.

Local Tip: It’s worth the wait. Trust me.

  1. Jim’s Steaks – South Street

Jim’s Steaks has been serving Philadelphians since 1939, and their South Street location has been a staple since the Bicentennial in 1976—another major moment in American history. Their steaks are seasoned beautifully, grilled with care, and served with pride. The aroma alone will have you standing in line with anticipation.

Local Tip: Visit during the afternoon lull if you want to skip the long lines!

  1. Dalessandro’s – Roxborough

For those looking to explore beyond Center City, Dalessandro’s in Roxborough offers a sandwich that’s well worth the trip. With high-quality meat, just the right amount of cheese, and pillowy rolls, their cheesesteaks have stood the test of time since opening in 1960. Grab one to go and take a walk on the nearby Wissahickon Trail—a favorite of locals and nature lovers.

Local Tip: Call ahead to avoid the dinner rush and enjoy your sandwich in the park.
