There are some things in life that even a sprained foot can’t keep me away from. Pie is one of those things. On Saturday, I was getting ready for the annual Church of the Holy Spirit’s Fair and Pie Contest in Harleysville. As I winced in pain, I knew I had two choices: stay home, put my feet up and rest, or I could grin, bear it, and enjoy the breakfast of champions: PIE. The choice was obvious! (When else can you treat yourself to 10 slices of pie for breakfast?!)
The decision was well worth it, as the contest entries were the best they’ve ever been! I should preface this by saying that chocolate is not normally my thing, but the German Chocolate that came in second was phenomenal! The Key Lime Pie won and for good reason—it was beautiful! They say the devil is in the details, but this cake was meticulously decorated and its flavor was pretty heavenly, if you ask me—light, tart and perfectly sweet at the same time! Instead of a traditional pinched crust, the baker cut out small hand stamped circles of pie dough and arranged it around the edge of the pan to make a beautiful crust.

The kids’ entries were pretty impressive too! One entry was a s’mores pie—oh. my. gosh. So good! It had chocolate chips and marshmallow throughout. There were a ton of berry pies—double berry pie, strawberry pie and a blueberry pie to rival grandma’s! And if your grandma is southern, there was a pecan pie to rival hers too!

I love this event because it brings together such a wonderful community of people. The pies are just as sweet as the people!
