Italian Market Unlocks a World of Culinary Treasures
The Italian Market is one of the oldest and largest open markets in the country. Located on South 9th Street in South Philadelphia, the Italian Market has it all: produce, meats and poultry, cheese and dairy, and even places for you to shop and purchase gifts. Remember to be flexible with your items, since the market is hyper-seasonal. Shopping the market is a great way to learn about new ingredients and incorporate them into your repertoire, which is one of my favorite parts about cooking!
The Italian Market is an iconic landmark in the city of Philadelphia, which means there’s never a dull moment. So whether you’re a local or tourist, you must follow some helpful rules to have a successful and memorable visit! So, I will teach you how to shop like a chef.

Now, let’s get into the Top 3 rules.
Rule 1: As you will soon discover, the Italian Market is a busy, bustling, but charming street. So, make sure to stand off to the side because letting people through is a must. You also want to be able to listen and communicate with your tour guide, or you might not hear what’s up next on the exciting agenda.
Rule 2: If you’re ready to buy, wave your hand to grab the attention of the market vendor and stand close to the purchasing area so people can get by. Or else, Nonna (who’s lived here for decades) next to you, who’s also ready to buy, might beat you to it. Invest in high-flavor ingredients such as lemons, limes (citrus fruits), fresh herbs, good olive oils and vinegars. These ingredients may seem expensive, but they provide the most flavor per dollar and can elevate tons of simple meals.
Rule 3: Just have fun and enjoy the experience! You are now visiting one of the most historic markets in the country, so remember to take in everything it has to offer. Instead of being held captive by certain recipes or buying too many vegetables only to see them wither in the fridge, buy ingredients that can easily be used in a wide range of dishes.
