It was raining hard on Saturday when I was greeted by Pat (Market Manager) at the Bryn Mawr Farmers’ Market. I have to thank my hubby, who traveled over 1-1/2 hours to get me a tent, set it up and took some pictures of me working. Without him I would have been soaked and unable to assemble my dishes.
I was not expecting much traffic due to the inclement weather, and was pleasantly surprised to have many loyal farmers’ market shoppers visit me. Earl from Livingood Farms had the best purple asparagus, so delicate in flavor, you could eat them raw, and we did. I made an asparagus, black bean, and roasted red pepper relish – simple and delicious. Lots of mmm’s were heard! That sound is like a round of applause to chefs.
You never know who is going to show up at the Market. During one of my demonstrations, I noticed a familiar face in the crowd. You know that feeling when you see someone; they look familiar but you can’t place a name with a face or remember how you know them? Well, it happened to me….After the demo was finished, I offered the gentleman a sample and he said, “Thanks Jacquie.” Oh, I definitely know him I thought; he knows my name, then he said, “It’s me, Chris from 8th grade.” Holy Mother of Pearl…..once he said his name, I immediately remembered my classmate from 8th grade, whom I have not seen in, let’s just say, quite a “FEW” years.
He proceeded to tell me that he and his wife were following me on Facebook; they knew I would be at the Market, wanted to stop by say hello, and do their weekly shopping. Well, hello right back at ya, what a wonderful present! They both sampled the food and made their purchases. How wonderful to connect with old friends through work! I love staying in touch!
Davidson Exotics brought over a bag of goodies….cremini mushroom. I prepared them with a little olive oil, salt, black pepper and a touch of lemon. I also purchased arugula and honey from Two Gander, dressed it with lemon vinaigrette and Parmigiano Reggiano shavings. I could not resist a warm baguette, from Wild Flour Bakery. “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing” on the ride home. Finally, sunshine made an appearance, too. What a great day!
“Thank you to Molly, Laura and Anastasia for welcoming me back for another great season.”
